Functional Capacity Assessment

Functional Capacity Assessments

At Assessment Squared, our expert occupational therapists provide functional capacity assessments designed to provide a detailed understanding of an individual’s physical and psychological capabilities in relation to their daily activities.

Tailored to meet the requirements of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), the recommendations will identify the support required in line with the individual’s goals, maximising their independence and participation in the community.

A NDIS functional capacity assessment offers a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s functional abilities and limitations, which may be for personal care, domestic tasks, community involvement, or employment, and identifies the support needed to help them overcome these challenges.

What is a functional capacity assessment?

A NDIS functional capacity assessment covers different aspects of function, depending on a person’s specific needs.  These may include personal care, mobility, communication, social interaction, work, and leisure activities. It may also assess strength, endurance, range of motion, or cognitive function.

During a functional capacity assessment, our occupational therapists evaluate an individual’s ability to perform a range of physical, cognitive, and daily living tasks. The areas assessed are tailored to the specific purpose of the evaluation, as well as the unique needs and goals of the individual.

What does a functional capacity assessment involve?

  • Personal care: The capacity to manage activities like bathing, grooming, toileting and dressing
  • Mobility: The ability to move independently, including walking, climbing stairs, and using mobility aids like crutches or wheelchairs
  • Communication: The ability to effectively communicate through speech, writing, or other methods
  • Work tasks: The capability to perform tasks, such as lifting, carrying, and operating machinery in a work environment, or typing, walking, and standing in an office setting.
  • Leisure and social activities: The capacity to participate in social interactions, hobbies and sport
  • Cognitive function: The capacity to carry out tasks that involve memory, and decision-making, such as following instructions or problem solving.

Assessment Squared is a trusted provider of functional capacity assessments.
